Neal Dietz goes Back to Back in Pro Mod Main at Holland

HOLLAND, NY… I-Evolve Technology Services, Angola Pennysaver, the Porsche Club of America and the VSP Marketing Graphics Group had “Chamber of Commerce Weather” this past Saturday night at the Holland NASCAR Motorsports Complex. Holland, NY pilot and former track champion Neal Dietz Jr left where he left off last Saturday night as he was once again victorious in the Getzoni Nationwide Insurance Agency NASCAR Pro Modified feature event. Other winners at the Complex included Freedom, NY ace Eldon King III winning his fourth straight and sixth of the season in the McClurg Auto Group Late Models. Cheektowaga, NY competitor Rich Carnes won his second Bank of Holland Charger main of the season while Buffalo’s Jeff Szafraniec won his sixth Hornet main of the 2012 campaign. Mark “Smoke” Hoch from West Seneca, NY won his second Cup Lite feature and South Wales’s Bob Marzec won his third M&M U Pull It Figure 8 car main of the season.

Dave Johnson and Owen Bednasz were on the front row for the Getzoni Nationwide Insurance NASCAR Pro Modified feature event and it was Johnson leading the opening circuits in his Rutherford-Johnson Racing entry. The Penfield, NY pilot led the opening laps and was pulling away from the field but had the young guns of Bednasz, “Earthquake” Jake Vernon and “the Rocket” Tommy Catalano. Catalano would get the better of the three rookies as “the Rocket” powered his way to the lead on lap five.
Once in front, Catalano would have some stiff competition from last week’s feature winner Neal Dietz Jr. Dietz, driving for Paul Graff got his 44 upfront after a late race caution for a spin in turn one involving Bednasz and Ed Schuler slowed the field down. On the restart, Dietz would pull away and would pick up his second consecutive feature win. Tommy Catalano would have a great run and finished in second and he was followed by his father Dave Catalano, current points leader Andy Jankowiak and Joe Evans completing the top five.

Qualifying winner Mike Ticco and JD Roberts led the field of McClurg Auto Group Late Models to the green flag for their feature event under the lights and it was Ticco leading the opening circuits behind the wheel of his MAT Truck Services, 1st in Line Sports number 65 machine. The veteran driver from Kenmore, NY was tough on this night as he was holding off the stiff competition that the Late Models have each and every Saturday night. When the race reached its halfway mark, defending divisional champion Eldon King III took command of the field. “The Empire Excavator” would pull away and win his sixth feature of the season.

Ted Welshans and Rich Carnes led the field of the Bank of Holland Chargers to the green flag and it was Carnes out to the lead. Carnes had a strong lead early on as did 2011 Hornet Champion Eric Brown. “Brownie” would have his Bruce’s Automotive ride on the top side of the speedway trying to reel in Carnes but his night would come to an end just before the halfway mark as he slowed and came to a stop in turns one and two. Brown would end up suffering engine problems which forced him to watch the remainder of the feature from the pit area.
The car on the move was Jim Loffredo. “The Lo-Risk Racer” from Orchard Park, NY was moving up throughout the field driving his I-Evolve, All Metal Inc car number six (6). Loffredo was running in a tight pack with last weeks feature winner Kris Hamann and “Crazy T” Tom Northem. Loffredo was able to sneak around both Hamann and Northem and began to set his sights on race leader Rich Carnes. Carnes would be able to hold off Loffredo to pick up his second Charger win of the season. Northem and Hamann crossed the line third and fourth respectively but was found to be illegal in post race technical inspection due to a carburetor infraction.

Josh Hill and Jennifer Termer led the field of Hornets to the green flag for the Hornet feature event and it was Termer jumping out into the early lead. Termer would have the lead for a few circuits in her McCool Paint Workz, Slippy’s Collision machine until she was passed by Dice Racing team member Ben Russo. Russo would pass Termer on the outside grove and had tough competition behind him for much of the feature distance. Louis Carbone and his cousin Tony Carbone would move up through the field and would challenge Russo for the top spot as would Russo’s teammate Jeff Szafraniec.
Szafraniec would pass Russo for the lead on lap 20 and would hold him off for the final ten circuits to claim his sixth win of the season. Tony Carbone would finish third while his cousins Louis Carbone and Chris Powers would complete the top five.

Mark Hoch and Shane Riffel led the field of Cup Lites to the green flag and it was Riffel getting the advantage from his outside pole starting position. Riffel and Billy Burd would swap paint several times in the final two laps and both came together in turn three on the final circuit. Riffel would cross the line first but was docked for rough riding, therefore giving the win to Hoch. TQ Midget competitor Dean McConnaughy would finish second in his second ever Cup Lite start. Charger Champion Jim Loffredo finished third while Jack Warrior Jr and Billy Burd completed the top five.

The M&M U Pull It Figure 8 Car feature was wild and woolly as usual as Joe Mastrocicco III and Butcher Palmer led the field onto the highbanks and when the field got back onto the Figure 8 course for the first time it would be “Chico” showing the way. Then his Marzec Construction teammate and current division point’s leader Bob Marzec would ‘build” his way to the lead after passing Chico before the cross-over “X”. Marzec would hold off defending champion Jason Adams for his third win of the year.

HOLLAND NOTES: Hornet feature winner Jeff Szafraniec proposed to his long time girlfriend and fellow racer Samantha Lutz in victory circle. Samantha said YES! K&N East driver John Salemi would compete in his second straight McClurg Auto Group Late Model event as he was driving the Troy Williams owned machine. Ontario, NY competitor “Papa Dave” Dave Catalano raced in his first Late Model event of the season, driving the John McClurg owned number 20. The Holland Motorsports Complex and Subway Restaurants announced that they have donated 1,000 tickets to the Roswell Park Cancer Institute for Subway Night at the races, August 25th.

Holland returns to action next Saturday night August 25th as it is Subway Night. Participating Subway Restaurants of Western New York will have free tickets for next Saturday’s racing program on the Holland Highbanks. Duplicating Consultants and the Boy Scouts will present the racing program featuring the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series featuring the Getzoni Nationwide Insurance NASCAR Pro Modifieds in their final Upstate Series race of the year, McClurg Auto Group Late Models, Bank of Holland Chargers, M&M U Pull-It Figure 8’s, and the 4 Cylinder Hornets will be on the highbanks plus the return of the competitive Casey’s Truck Salvage TQ Midgets. Pit gates will swing open at 1:30pm with practice getting underway at 2:00pm ($20 per car and driver) while the grandstand gates will open at 4:45pm. Qualifying will begin promptly at 5:00pm while NASCAR feature action will be underway at 7:05pm.
