This past week was another tough one. I started out in tenth, moved up to 5th in a matter of 2 laps, then got tagged and almost lost it down the frontstretch! I was able to save it from wrecking but only finished 10th as there were no cautions in the event. This week is the season finale for a total of 50 laps.

Andy Jankowiak Tops August 25 Winners List at Holland: King, Lafferty, Wollaber and Szafraniec Add to Win Totals
HOLLAND, NY… The Boy Scouts along with Dual Printing, Duplicating Consultants and VSP Marketing Group presented Subway Night at the Races at the Holland NASCAR Motorsports Complex on a warm late summer evening at the Southern Erie County oval. On the highbanks it was Tonawanda, NY resident and second generation driver Andy Jankowiak won his fifth Getzoni Nationwide Insurance NASCAR Pro Modified feature event of the season. “The Empire Excavator” Eldon King III from Freedom, NY picked up his fifth straight feature win and seventh on the season for the McClurg Auto Group Late Models. West Valley, NY competitor Shawn Lafferty won his second career Bank of Holland Charger feature and second of the season. North Tonawanda, NY racer Dave Wollaber picked up his fourth win of the season for the Casey’s TQ Midget Series while Buffalo, NY competitor and recently engaged Jeff Szafraniec picked up his seventh win of the season in the Hornets.
Qualifying event winner Owen Bednasz and Dave Johnson led the field of Getzoni Nationwide Insurance NASCAR Pro Modifieds to the green flag for their 30 lap feature event and it was Johnson leading lap number one. With Johnson pulling away early, the battle was on for second with young guns Bednasz and “The Rocket” Tommy Catalano battling for the runner up spot with Joe Evans and current points leader Andy Jankowiak right there as well. Jankowiak would get around Evans and Catalano and set his sights on Bednasz for second and would pass Bednasz on lap 13 for the second spot. At the races halfway mark, Johnson would lead Jankowiak, Bednasz, Tommy Catalano and Dave Catalano would be in the top five as Joe Evans was right behind the elder Catalano.
Tommy Catalano’s night would end on lap 21 as he got loose exiting turn two and hit the infield jersey barrier. Catalano was running in fourth at the time of the spin. On the restart Johnson had Jankowiak to his outside and Johnson would have the advantage on the current divisional points leader. Joe Evans, Owen Bednasz and Joe Carbone came together entering turn number one ending all three of their nights. The late race restart saw Johnson and Jankowiak go side by side for the race lead but Johnson would maintain the lead. Jankowiak would go to the outside and pass Johnson for the lead with five laps remaining. Jankowiak would add to his points lead as he would win his fifth feature of the 2012 season. Johnson would have a career best second place finish and was followed to the line by Dave Catalano, Bobby Martin and Ed Schuler completing the top five.
JD Roberts and Corey Glover led the McClurg Auto Group Late Models and it was Roberts, from Glenwood leading the opening circuits and was strong all race long. Defending divisional champion Eldon King III worked through the field and was up to third and challenging second place Mike Ticco when the caution came out for Jesse Cotriss and Corey Glover after they got tangled in turns three and four. On the lap six restart, King would have an inside out move to get around Ticco and then by lap 10, would take over the lead from Roberts.
King would pull away to his fifth consecutive checkered flag and the race was on behind him. Roberts would hold off Ticco for second while Brandon Glover and Kreitzbender would complete the top five. .
Anthony Kelley and Ken Maltby led the field of Bank of Holland Chargers to the green flag with Maltby leading the opening circuit. Defending Figure 8 divisional champion Jason Adams moved up from his fourth starting position and quickly began putting pressure on Maltby early on with “the Laugh Man” Shawn Lafferty and “Zach Attack” Zach Myers running in third. Maltby got loose entering turn number one and that would allow Lafferty to take over the race lead. Current point’s leader Dave Wilson Jr and Kris Hamann worked their way up through the field and were inside the top five as was “Crazy T” Tom Northem.
“The Mad Man” Marty Hughes started seventh on the grid and was racing in second at the races halfway mark as the field of Chargers were trying to reel in race leader Shawn Lafferty. Kris Hamann would pass Wilson for third with eight laps remaining and began chasing down Hughes for second. Hamann would go underneath Hughes for the runner up spot with five remaining but was unsuccessful as Lafferty would go on to win his second feature of the season. Hughes, Hamann, Wilson and Jim Loffredo would complete the top five.
Nelson Rung and Arik McGruder were on the front row for the Casey’s TQ Midget Series feature as the midgets raced “under the lights” for the first time this season on the Holland highbanks and the race couldn’t get one lap in the books before the caution would appear as 2010 Hornet Champion George Quintana and Scott Gleed came together on the front stretch with both cars being towed off the track. When the race got underway it was Rung showing the lead with second generation drivers Andy Jankowiak and Jonathan Reid running in the top three and Andy J would take over the lead on lap four. Current Holland TQ Midget point’s leader Kyle Hutchinson moved up through the field and was up in second by the races halfway point with multi-time feature winner Dave Wollaber running in third and defending track champion Camden Barber racing in the fourth spot and also on the move.
Wollaber snuck underneath Hutchinson for second and would set his sights on teammate and race leader Andy Jankowiak and Wollaber would take over the lead on lap number 12. Wollaber would pull away and went on to pick up his fourth win of the season on the highbanks. Hutchinson would pass Jankowiak in the late laps to claim second with Barber and Musto completing the top five.
Jack Warrior Jr and Jennifer Termer led the field of Hornets to the green flag and it was Warrior leading the way in front of the grandstands but it was Joe Mastrocicco leading when the field swarmed to the start-finish line to complete the first lap. The first caution came out on lap number three as Louis Carbone slid down the back stretch and hit the infield barrier. On the restart, it was “Chico” and defending Hornet Champion Eric Brown on the front row and “Brownie” would take over the lead on lap number four. Brown’s lead would dissipate as Chris Powers would take over the lead on lap nine. The yellow Whelen lights would come back on that same lap as Grant Hill along with Bob Marzec and the Warrior brothers all came together in turn two.
On the restart, the top two in points, Jeff Szafraniec and Powers led the field back to the green flag with Powers being scored as the leader with Szafraniec running in second and was followed by Powers’s cousin Tony Carbone in third. Running in the top five when the field passed starter Doug Carnes’s halfway mark was Dice Racing’s Ben Russo and Bill Lutz. Szafraniec would be able to reel in Powers and passed him in the late going and was able to pick up his seventh win of the season. Powers finished second and was followed to the line by Ben Russo, Tony Carbone and Samantha Lutz completed the top five.
The wild and wacky M&M U Pull It Figure 8’s took to the track with and an incident which took half the field out of competition and officials deemed it was a no event. No winner was claimed because the race did not get one lap completed.
HOLLAND NOTES: The Catalano racing family had an interesting weekend as Tommy and Amy suffered major damage at the Spencer Speedway on Friday night, Dave spent all night repairing both rides so all three Pro Modifieds can be here at Holland for the final Upstate Pro Modified Series event of the 2012 season. Then in his qualifying event, Dave rolled his CP Ward ride down the front stretch and landed in turn one. Dave was able to climb out on his own power. Dave did compete in the feature event driving his wife’s Amy’s number 64. Lakeview’s Owen Bednasz would win his first career Pro Modified qualifying event earlier in the evening. For the fourth time in 2012, the potent Dagofast Fabrication Hornet Team has swept the qualifying event for the 4 Cylinder Hornets with Louis Carbone and his cousin Tony grabbing the checkered flags. The Holland JV Volleyball team raised $953 dollars in the 50/50 split.
Holland returns to action next Saturday night September 1st as it is Budweiser Season Championships Presented by Martin Brothers Chevrolet. A full program of the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series featuring the Getzoni Nationwide Insurance NASCAR Pro Modifieds, McClurg Auto Group Late Models, Bank of Holland Chargers, M&M U Pull-It Figure 8’s, and the 4 Cylinder Hornets will be on the highbanks plus the Casey’s Truck Salvage TQ Midgets and the Cup Lites. Pit gates will swing open at 3:00pm with practice getting underway at 3:30. Grandstand gates will open at 4:15pm while qualifying will get underway at 4:30pm.

Neal Dietz goes Back to Back in Pro Mod Main at Holland
HOLLAND, NY… I-Evolve Technology Services, Angola Pennysaver, the Porsche Club of America and the VSP Marketing Graphics Group had “Chamber of Commerce Weather” this past Saturday night at the Holland NASCAR Motorsports Complex. Holland, NY pilot and former track champion Neal Dietz Jr left where he left off last Saturday night as he was once again victorious in the Getzoni Nationwide Insurance Agency NASCAR Pro Modified feature event. Other winners at the Complex included Freedom, NY ace Eldon King III winning his fourth straight and sixth of the season in the McClurg Auto Group Late Models. Cheektowaga, NY competitor Rich Carnes won his second Bank of Holland Charger main of the season while Buffalo’s Jeff Szafraniec won his sixth Hornet main of the 2012 campaign. Mark “Smoke” Hoch from West Seneca, NY won his second Cup Lite feature and South Wales’s Bob Marzec won his third M&M U Pull It Figure 8 car main of the season.
Dave Johnson and Owen Bednasz were on the front row for the Getzoni Nationwide Insurance NASCAR Pro Modified feature event and it was Johnson leading the opening circuits in his Rutherford-Johnson Racing entry. The Penfield, NY pilot led the opening laps and was pulling away from the field but had the young guns of Bednasz, “Earthquake” Jake Vernon and “the Rocket” Tommy Catalano. Catalano would get the better of the three rookies as “the Rocket” powered his way to the lead on lap five.
Once in front, Catalano would have some stiff competition from last week’s feature winner Neal Dietz Jr. Dietz, driving for Paul Graff got his 44 upfront after a late race caution for a spin in turn one involving Bednasz and Ed Schuler slowed the field down. On the restart, Dietz would pull away and would pick up his second consecutive feature win. Tommy Catalano would have a great run and finished in second and he was followed by his father Dave Catalano, current points leader Andy Jankowiak and Joe Evans completing the top five.

The veteran driver from Kenmore, NY was tough on this night as he was holding off the stiff competition that the Late Models have each and every Saturday night. When the race reached its halfway mark, defending divisional champion Eldon King III took command of the field. “The Empire Excavator” would pull away and win his sixth feature of the season.
Ted Welshans and Rich Carnes led the field of the Bank of Holland Chargers to the green flag and it was Carnes out to the lead. Carnes had a strong lead early on as did 2011 Hornet Champion Eric Brown. “Brownie” would have his Bruce’s Automotive ride on the top side of the speedway trying to reel in Carnes but his night would come to an end just before the halfway mark as he slowed and came to a stop in turns one and two. Brown would end up suffering engine problems which forced him to watch the remainder of the feature from the pit area.
The car on the move was Jim Loffredo. “The Lo-Risk Racer” from Orchard Park, NY was moving up throughout the field driving his I-Evolve, All Metal Inc car number six (6). Loffredo was running in a tight pack with last weeks feature winner Kris Hamann and “Crazy T” Tom Northem. Loffredo was able to sneak around both Hamann and Northem and began to set his sights on race leader Rich Carnes. Carnes would be able to hold off Loffredo to pick up his second Charger win of the season. Northem and Hamann crossed the line third and fourth respectively but was found to be illegal in post race technical inspection due to a carburetor infraction.
Josh Hill and Jennifer Termer led the field of Hornets to the green flag for the Hornet feature event and it was Termer jumping out into the early lead. Termer would have the lead for a few circuits in her McCool Paint Workz, Slippy’s Collision machine until she was passed by Dice Racing team member Ben Russo. Russo would pass Termer on the outside grove and had tough competition behind him for much of the feature distance. Louis Carbone and his cousin Tony Carbone would move up through the field and would challenge Russo for the top spot as would Russo’s teammate Jeff Szafraniec.
Szafraniec would pass Russo for the lead on lap 20 and would hold him off for the final ten circuits to claim his sixth win of the season. Tony Carbone would finish third while his cousins Louis Carbone and Chris Powers would complete the top five.
Mark Hoch and Shane Riffel led the field of Cup Lites to the green flag and it was Riffel getting the advantage from his outside pole starting position. Riffel and Billy Burd would swap paint several times in the final two laps and both came together in turn three on the final circuit. Riffel would cross the line first but was docked for rough riding, therefore giving the win to Hoch. TQ Midget competitor Dean McConnaughy would finish second in his second ever Cup Lite start. Charger Champion Jim Loffredo finished third while Jack Warrior Jr and Billy Burd completed the top five.
The M&M U Pull It Figure 8 Car feature was wild and woolly as usual as Joe Mastrocicco III and Butcher Palmer led the field onto the highbanks and when the field got back onto the Figure 8 course for the first time it would be “Chico” showing the way. Then his Marzec Construction teammate and current division point’s leader Bob Marzec would ‘build” his way to the lead after passing Chico before the cross-over “X”. Marzec would hold off defending champion Jason Adams for his third win of the year.
HOLLAND NOTES: Hornet feature winner Jeff Szafraniec proposed to his long time girlfriend and fellow racer Samantha Lutz in victory circle. Samantha said YES! K&N East driver John Salemi would compete in his second straight McClurg Auto Group Late Model event as he was driving the Troy Williams owned machine. Ontario, NY competitor “Papa Dave” Dave Catalano raced in his first Late Model event of the season, driving the John McClurg owned number 20. The Holland Motorsports Complex and Subway Restaurants announced that they have donated 1,000 tickets to the Roswell Park Cancer Institute for Subway Night at the races, August 25th.
Holland returns to action next Saturday night August 25th as it is Subway Night. Participating Subway Restaurants of Western New York will have free tickets for next Saturday’s racing program on the Holland Highbanks. Duplicating Consultants and the Boy Scouts will present the racing program featuring the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series featuring the Getzoni Nationwide Insurance NASCAR Pro Modifieds in their final Upstate Series race of the year, McClurg Auto Group Late Models, Bank of Holland Chargers, M&M U Pull-It Figure 8’s, and the 4 Cylinder Hornets will be on the highbanks plus the return of the competitive Casey’s Truck Salvage TQ Midgets. Pit gates will swing open at 1:30pm with practice getting underway at 2:00pm ($20 per car and driver) while the grandstand gates will open at 4:45pm. Qualifying will begin promptly at 5:00pm while NASCAR feature action will be underway at 7:05pm.

Szafraniec would pass Russo for the lead on lap 20 and would hold him off for the final ten circuits to claim his sixth win of the season. Tony Carbone would finish third while his cousins Louis Carbone and Chris Powers would complete the top five.
Mark Hoch and Shane Riffel led the field of Cup Lites to the green flag and it was Riffel getting the advantage from his outside pole starting position. Riffel and Billy Burd would swap paint several times in the final two laps and both came together in turn three on the final circuit. Riffel would cross the line first but was docked for rough riding, therefore giving the win to Hoch. TQ Midget competitor Dean McConnaughy would finish second in his second ever Cup Lite start. Charger Champion Jim Loffredo finished third while Jack Warrior Jr and Billy Burd completed the top five.
The M&M U Pull It Figure 8 Car feature was wild and woolly as usual as Joe Mastrocicco III and Butcher Palmer led the field onto the highbanks and when the field got back onto the Figure 8 course for the first time it would be “Chico” showing the way. Then his Marzec Construction teammate and current division point’s leader Bob Marzec would ‘build” his way to the lead after passing Chico before the cross-over “X”. Marzec would hold off defending champion Jason Adams for his third win of the year.
HOLLAND NOTES: Hornet feature winner Jeff Szafraniec proposed to his long time girlfriend and fellow racer Samantha Lutz in victory circle. Samantha said YES! K&N East driver John Salemi would compete in his second straight McClurg Auto Group Late Model event as he was driving the Troy Williams owned machine. Ontario, NY competitor “Papa Dave” Dave Catalano raced in his first Late Model event of the season, driving the John McClurg owned number 20. The Holland Motorsports Complex and Subway Restaurants announced that they have donated 1,000 tickets to the Roswell Park Cancer Institute for Subway Night at the races, August 25th.
Holland returns to action next Saturday night August 25th as it is Subway Night. Participating Subway Restaurants of Western New York will have free tickets for next Saturday’s racing program on the Holland Highbanks. Duplicating Consultants and the Boy Scouts will present the racing program featuring the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series featuring the Getzoni Nationwide Insurance NASCAR Pro Modifieds in their final Upstate Series race of the year, McClurg Auto Group Late Models, Bank of Holland Chargers, M&M U Pull-It Figure 8’s, and the 4 Cylinder Hornets will be on the highbanks plus the return of the competitive Casey’s Truck Salvage TQ Midgets. Pit gates will swing open at 1:30pm with practice getting underway at 2:00pm ($20 per car and driver) while the grandstand gates will open at 4:45pm. Qualifying will begin promptly at 5:00pm while NASCAR feature action will be underway at 7:05pm.

Neal Dietz Jr. Tops Holland Winners List on August 11: King, Hamann, Emerling, Szafraniec and Adams all Collect Checkereds
HOLLAND, NY… Murray Brothers Nurseries and VSP Marketing Group presented the August 11 racing program at the Holland NASCAR Motorsports Complex on a cool Saturday evening. Holland, NY driver and former multi-time track champion Neal Dietz Jr would pick up his first checkered flag in several seasons after winning the Getzoni Nationwide Insurance NASCAR Pro Modified feature event. Freedom, NY driver and 2011 McClurg Auto Group Late Model Champion Eldon King III won his fifth feature of the season. East Aurora, NY driver Kris Hamann won his second straight Bank of Holland Charger feature main. Buffalo’s Jeff Szafraniec won his divisional high fifth Glenwood, NY driver and defending M&M U Pull It Figure 8 Champion Jason Adams won his third victory of the season while Orchard Park, NY resident Patrick Emerling had an off night from his busy Whelen Modified Tour schedule and picked up the victory for the visiting Cup Lite Series.
Dave Johnson and Joe Carbone led the field of Getzoni Nationwide Insurance NASCAR Pro Modifieds to the green flag for their feature event and it was Johnson out to the early race lead. Owen Bednasz went three wide with Carbone and Amy Catalano to take over second on lap three. Tommy “the Rocket” Catalano got loose off of turn two and had contact with the wall and collected his father in the process.
On the restart it was Bednasz taking over the lead from Johnson. Carbone sat in third while being chassed by Amy Catalano and current point’s leader Andy Jankowiak. “Earthquake” Jake Vernon would loop his 27 machine in turn four while fighting for a top five spot on lap 12.
On the restart, Joe Carbone took over the lead from Bednasz. Amy Catalano would get around Bednasz for second as Andy Jankowiak and Neal Dietz went side by side for third. With ten laps remaining, Amy would take over the race lead as Bobby Martin would loop his racer on the back stretch to slow the field down for the third time. The lap 21 restart saw Catalano showing the way with Dietz running in second and Dietz would go to the outside of Catalano to take over the lead on lap 24. The yellow lights would reappear on lap 28 as Owen Bednasz would spin in turn three and would get collected by Tommy Catalano. Both drivers were able to continue on racing the final two circuits.
The green-white-checkered shootout style restart would see Dietz and Andy Jankowiak on the front row and Dietz had the lead by a front nerf bar over Jankowiak and Dietz would pick up the checkered flag. Amy Catalano would finish in third with Joe Evans and Joe Carbone completing the top five. Both Jankowiak and Evans were found to be illegal in post race tech.
Qualifying event winner “Racer Nick” Nick Crassi and Josh Hathaway led the field of McClurg Auto Group Late Models to the green flag for their 20 lap feature event and it was Crassi out to the early lead. Crassi would continue to lead past the halfway mark and was looking strong all evening. The caution came out on lap 12 as JD Roberts spun on the back stretch to slow the field down for the first time. Eldon King III would pass Crassi on the restart and would hold off the Gowanda pilot to grab his fifth win of the season.
Ken Maltby and Rich Carnes brought the field of Bank of Holland Chargers to the green flag for their 30 lap feature and it was “the Mad Man” Marty Hughes leading the opening circuit. Last week’s feature winner Kris Hamann worked his way up to third from his eighth starting spot as well as two time divisional champion Jim Loffredo was running in second and began chasing down the Mad Man from his seventh starting position. The caution would come out on lap 14 as current points leader Dave Wilson Jr would loop his Wilson Crane Service number 21 in turn three.
On the restart it was Hughes continuing to show the way and Hamann worked underneath Hughes to take over the lead at the races halfway mark. Former track champion Jerry Kosmowski would battle defending Charger champ Jim Loffredo for third but was unsuccessful as Loffredo passed Hughes for second with six laps remaining. Hamann would hold off Loffredo to claim his second straight victory. Marty Hughes, Jerry Kosmowski and Jason Adams would complete the top five.

Winning night news from 7/14/12
The George Decker Memorial 100 was race number three at Holland for the Holland/Spencer/Chemung Upstate Pro Modified Series. Bright sunny skies welcomed the fans to the Holland Motorsports Complex for the 13th running of the prestigious George Decker Memorial 100 on July 14th. Kayak Pools sponsored the nights racing program that featured a complete show featuring the NASCAR Whelen-All American Series. Andy Jankowiak of Tonawanda, NY led the last 53 circuits to pick up his fourth win of the season on the highbanks, winning the George Decker Memorial 100 for the Getzoni Nationwide Insurance NASCAR Pro Modifieds. Other winners included Cuba’s NY Brandon Glover winning the feature for the McClurg Auto Group Late Models. Rich Carnes of Cheektowaga, NY won the Bank of Holland Chargers main while Orchard Park competitor Chris Powers won the Hornet main. Lockport resident Bobby Holmes won the feature event for the Casey’s Truck Salvage TQ Midgets and Shane Riffel picked up his second Cup Lites feature of the season while Glenwood’s Jason Adams won his third consecutive M&M U Pull It Figure 8 car main.
Owen Bednasz and Joe Carbone led the field of Getzoni Nationwide Insurance NASCAR Pro Modifieds for the 13th running of the George Decker Memorial 100 and it was Bednasz leading the opening circuit. Bednasz’s lead was short lived as Carbone took the lead away on lap two with Joe Evans, Andy Jankowiak, Mike Fiebelkorn Jr and Bednasz in the top five.
Fiebelkorn worked around Evans and Carbone to take over the lead on lap 11 with Carbone, Jankowiak, Evans and Bednasz leading Jeff Ruddy, Don King, Kevin Miller and the Catalano family as Tommy, Dave and Amy were all behind the leaders. The yellow lights would come on for the first time on lap 16 as Joe Carbone and Andy Jankowiak made contact and Carbone slid and Evans, Ruddy and Miller were all involved.
On the restart it was Fiebelkorn and Bednasz leading the field and it was Fiebelkorn showing the way and Bednasz and Tommy Catalano came together and being collected was Don King and Amy Catalano, making her first start of the season after giving birth to her fifth child on Independence Day. The following restart saw
Jeff Ruddy hit the turn three Armco barrier. Ruddy was able to walk away under his own power.
On the restart, Fiebelkorn and Dave Catalano shared the front row and Fiebelkorn pulled away from the rest of the field. Current points leader Andy Jankowiak moved up through the field and got around Carbone to take over third place on lap 24. Jankowiak then quickly went to work on the top two as he passed Dave Catalano on lap 40 and then just seven laps later, passed Fiebelkorn on the inside of turns one and two to take over the lead.
Andy J’s assault of the field began as he was lapping cars left and right. Jankowiak, behind the controls of his VSP Marketing Group, MAT Truck Services, Aurora Car Care and RV Centre, Oddy’s number 57x pulled away from Fiebelkorn in his ZJ’s Restaurant, Fiebelkorn’s Collision number 10 as the 2010 track champion tried everything in his power to take the lead back but Jankowiak’s ride was just too strong on this night.
Second generation driver Andy Jankowiak from Tonawanda, NY led the last 53 circuits to pick up the win in the 13th George Decker Memorial 100. Mike Fiebelkorn Jr crossed the line in second but was found to be illegal in post race inspection. Dave Catalano would be scored in second while Joe Carbone and Owen Bednasz completed the top four. Carbone was the final competitor who finished the event on the lead lap.
Brandon Glover and Nick Crassi would lead the field of Late Models to the green flag for their 20 lap feature event and it was Glover out to the race lead. Eldon King III tried everything in his power to reel in and pass Glover but it was not his night as the “Young Gun” Brandon Glover picked up his second win of the season. King would finish in second and was followed to the line by Nick Crassi, Corey Glover and Mike Ticco completing the top five.
Tim Northem and Rich Carnes led the field of Chargers to the green flag for their 30 lap feature event and it was Carnes out to the early race lead by a bumper over his front row counterpart Northem. The caution would come out on lap three as Ken Maltby lost the handle of his Maltby Drywall 36 and Shawn Lafferty had no where to go. Both were able to continue on in the main event. On the restart, Carnes led defending Hornet Champion Eric Brown to the green flag and Carnes continued to show the way with Brown, Kris Hamann, Northem and Jim Loffredo running in the top five with five laps in the books. Dave Wilson Jr got around Loffredo for fifth and then passed Tim Northem and moved into fourth all in a lap and a half. Wilson then was able to go underneath Hamann and was able to clear Hamann at the race’s halfway mark and began his chase of race leaders Rich Carnes and Eric Brown.
Ted Welshans came to a stop on the back stretch to bring out the second caution of the feature on lap 21. Welshans suffered a broken right front hub and was unable to continue. Carnes and Brown led Wilson, Hamann and Tim Northem on the restart and Carnes was able to hold them off for his first win of the season. Eric Brown would finish in second and was followed to the line by Wilson, Hamann and Tim Northem.
Andy Jankowiak and Arik McGruder led the field of Casey’s TQ Midgets to the green flag for their main event and it was Jankowiak out to the early lead. Wayne Turnbull from Paris, Ontario and Dave Wollaber made contact in turn two wall and Turnbull barrel rolled on the back stretch. Turnbull was alert while talking to the medical personnel. The feature was resumed with Bobby Holmes and Kyle Hutchinson leading the way around the fast Holland highbanks. Holmes and Hutchinson along with Andy Nye and Camden Barber pulled away from the rest of the field as Barber passed Nye for third and then passed Hutchinson for second and began to chase down Bobby Holmes. With five laps remaining, Barber, the third generation driver from Bliss took the lead away from Holmes and was being chassed down by Dave Wollaber. Scott Gleed would slow the field down on lap 18, to set up a two lap shootout. The shootout saw Holmes able to complete a turn four last lap pass on Barber to grab his first TQ Midget feature at Holland. Dave Wollaber was able to drive through the field and finished third and Wollaber was followed to the line by Kyle Hutchinson and Arik “Scooter” McGruder. Wayne Turnbull was taken to a local medical facility for observation after his viscous flip.
David Warrior and Jay Canonico led the field of Hornets to the green flag for their 30 lap feature go and it was Canonico out to the early lead. Current points leader Jeff Szafraniec had his night come to an early end with just two laps completed after making contact with the turn two concrete. Jeff was ok and climbed out of his Pizza Express Honda under his own power and his car was on the wrong end of the tow truck and took the lone ride back to the pits. On the early race restart it was Canonico and rookie competitor Tim Swatsworth on the front row and the veteran Canonico took command of the field. Tony Carbone was able to clear Swatsworth for second and then passed Canonico for the lead. Cousin Louis Carbone worked around his twin car of Canonico for second and challenged his cousin for the top spot. Teammates Bob Marzec and Kyle Skoney simultaneously had problems with their right rear tires to bring out the caution on lap 13. Marzec suffered a right rear flat while Skoney’s right rear tire completely went off the Marzec Construction entry. Marzec was able to continue while Skoney was unable to finish the Hornet feature. “It was a family feud up front” said Track Announcer Rick Mooney as the Carbone family was joined by cousin Chris Powers to run one two three with Bill Lutz and Samantha Lutz running in the top five when the race passed the halfway mark. Powers was able to pass Tony Carbone for first place on lap 18 and was able to hold off the family to win his second feature of 2012. Louis Carbone would finish second and was followed closely to the line by Tony Carbone, Samantha Lutz and Bob Marzec.
Joe Mastrocicco III and David Warrior led the field of M&M U Pull-It Figure 8s to the green flag for their feature under the lights and it was Chico out to the early race lead. The red flag came out as Kyle Skoney ran into an implement tire. Skoney was able to climb out of his racer under his own power. On the restart, defending divisional champion Jason Adams led the field back onto the Figure 8 course and was able to fend off Bob the Builder Bob Marzec to pick up his third consecutive feature event.
Jeremy Ratajczyk and Billy Burd led the field of Cup Lites to the green flag for their feature event and it was Billy Burd out to the early race lead in his Austin’s Army for Cancer Awareness number 22 machine. Shane Riffel in his Monster Energy Drink number 54 went to the outside and passed Burd for the top spot on lap number three. Riffel would hold off Burd and Mark Hoch to notch his second win of the season for the Cup Lites series.
HOLLAND NOTES: 21 of the best Sportsman Modified competitors in the Northeast came to the highbanks of Holland to compete in the prestigious George Decker Memorial 100. Greece, NY competitor Kevin Miller won the Best Appearing Car award from McCool Paint Workz. Bobby Martin purchased former track Champion Justin Shepker’s machine and suffered mechanical issues and was unable to compete. 2011 race winner Kirk Totten and 2011 track champion Amy Catalano both made their first appearances of the season. Kyle Hutchinson from East Aurora won his first career Casey’s TQ Midget qualifying event. Hutchinson held off Andy Jankowiak and last week’s Series winner Jonathan Reid to pick up the win. Congratulations to Race Director Scott Wander and his wife and Program Director Jessica Wander on the birth of their daughter Ella on July 1st and also to Dave and Amy Catalano on the birth of their son Troyer on the 4th of July. Wedding bells are in the air for Pro Mod driver Ed Schueler and his fiancé Cali who said “I do’s” on Sunday July 15.
Holland returns to action next Saturday night July 21st as it is Midseason Championships for all classes. It is also Emergency Services Night as all emergency personnel will be admitted for $5 with valid ID. Merritt Estates Winery and Seven Chances Inc will present the racing program featuring a complete show of the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series. Also on that day will be the rescheduled Faster Pastor race for area clergymen and women as well as the 50 lap special for the McClurg Auto Group Late Models. Pit gates will swing open at 3:30pm while the grandstand gates will open at 4:45pm. Qualifying will begin promptly at 5:00pm while NASCAR feature action will be underway at 7:05pm.
