8/10/13 resutls
9th place this week. We suffered a left rear tire blowout with three laps to go. Holland is off this coming Saturday the 17. We will be back racing on the 24th.

Dave Catalano and Kirk Totten Split Pro Mod Mains; Jason Dieter wins Super Stock Tour Race
HOLLAND, NY…. Ontario, NY driver Dave Catalano and Barker, NY pilot Kirk Totten split the twin 30’s for the Getzoni Nationwide Insurance Agency NASCAR Pro Modifieds on Kayak Pools, Buffalo and Erie County Public Library night at the Holland NASCAR Motorsports Complex on a sensational Saturday evening in the Holland hills. Eldon King from Freedom, NY swept the McClurg Auto Group Late Models while Jason Dieter from Hamburg, NY pulled away to pick up the visiting Super Stock Series victory. Dave Wilson Jr from Hamburg won his third Bank of Holland Chargers triumph of the season. Dave Wollaber from North Tonawanda, NY claimed his fourth NYPAMA TQ Midgets feature of the season. Chris Powers from Orchard Park, NY picked up his second Hornet victory of the season. Mike Myers was victorious in the M&M U Pull-It Figure 8’s. John Grandits was awarded with the Enduro victory.
In the first Getzoni Nationwide Insurance Agency NASCAR Pro Modifieds main, it was Amy and Tommy Catalano leading the way. Jeff Brown, George Skora and Jimmy Zacharias came together in turn three. Brown’s night ended early. On the lap one restart, Amy Catalano took the lead away from her son Tommy and her husband Dave raced his way into third place. The drivers trying to spoil the Catalano one-two-three finish was Kirk Totten and George Skora III. Both young drivers tried everything they had to get around Tommy Catalano but Tommy, fresh off his first career win the night before at Spencer, was able to maintain his third position on the speedway as he watched his parents fight for the win. Dave Catalano was able to hold off his wife Amy and son Tommy to pick up his first win of the season.
The 30 lap Getzoni Agency Pro Modified feature saw Jimmy Zacharias and Kyle Inman lead the field to the green flag and it was Jimmy Z showing the way early on. Kirk Totten was able to take over the race lead on lap number seven after getting underneath the Zacharias racer. Dave Catalano, winner of the made up feature earlier in the evening, raced his way past Jimmy Z and moved into the runner up spot. Catalano tried everything he could in the late going but Totten continued to show the way. The battle was on for fourth place between Zacharias and George Skora III in the late going after Amy Catalano past Zacharias for third place just past the races halfway point. Totten pulled away from both Dave and Amy Catalano to claim his fourth win of the season. Jimmy Zacharias would finish in fourth and George Skora III would complete the top five.
In the first McClurg Auto Group Late Model feature, Mike Ticco and Eldon King III led the field to the green flag and it was King jumping into the race lead. With King showing the way, Brandon Glover and Mike Ticco battled for second throughout the event. Glover would get around Ticco for the runner up spot and would drive all over the speedway to find the right line and attempt to pass King. But Eldon King was too strong on this night as King fought off all of Glover’s challenges to pick up his fourth win of the season.
JD Roberts and Mike Ticco led the Late Models to the green for their regular 20 lap feature event and it was Ticco showing the way. Eldon took the lead on lap four and quickly showed the field why he was the defending divisional champion. The race was on for second place between Brandon Glover and Mike Ticco for much of the event. The two slightly made contact a couple of times but both drivers were able to race hard and Ticco would get the advantage of the young Glover to maintain second place throughout the event. Eldon King drove away to his second win of the night and fifth of the season.
“The Big Show” Ted Welshans and Lee Sharpsteen led the 18 car field of Super Stocks to the green flag and Sharpsteen got loose and hit the wall. Tim Welshans was also involved and both were able to continue. With one lap in, Jason Dieter and Joe Fetzer led the field back to the green flag and it was Dieter showing the way. Divisional point’s leader Mike Ramos got passed by Tommy Markham for third place on lap three and the “lavender machine” Wayne Bernhard racing in the top five. Ramos was able to pass Fetzer to move into second place and began his chase of the race leader Dieter. As Dieter hit lap traffic, Ramos and Bernhard battled for the runner up spot. Bernhard moved into second place and began his chase of Dieter, who had a full straightaway lead over the rest of the field. Jason Dieter pulled away to pick up his first career Super Stock Series win. Wayne Bernhard finished in second and was followed to the line by Tommy Markham, Sam Fullone and Joe Mancuso completed the top five.
Dave Wilson Jr jumped into the lead after passing Ken Maltby early in the 30 lap feature event for the Bank of Holland Chargers. Maltby was joined in the front row by Tom Northem and Northem and Maltby battled for second for most of the 30 lap feature event. With Wilson running away with the lead, a five car battle between Maltby, Northem, Eric Brown, Zach Myers and Rich Carnes shaped up for second place with Northem getting the advantage with a handful of laps remaining. Wilson drove away to pick up his third win of the season.
Cody Mollnow and Jim Fleischman led the NYPAMA TQ Midgets to the green flag for their 20 lap feature event and it was Fleischman showing the way on the opening circuit with Chad Heywood in second place. Off an early race restart, Jonathan Reid moved into the lead on lap three with
Dave Wollaber and Andy Nye charged into second and third place. Wollaber then used the crossover move and passed Reid for the lead on lap five. Andy Nye spun in turn two to bring out the races third caution with six laps completed. On the restart, Dave Wollaber showed the way with Shawn Nye moving into third place and then Nye went underneath Reid to move into the runner up spot and quickly went to work on race leader Dave Wollaber. Nye would go underneath Wollaber and took over the race lead on lap 10. Nye and Wollaber would race side by side for several laps, fighting for the race lead and Wollaber regained the lead with seven laps remaining. Jonathan Reid brought out the caution suffering a broken driveshaft. On the restart, Wollaber would lead and hold off Shawn Nye to pick up the victory. Camden Barber would finish in third and was followed closely to the line by Kyle Hutchinson and Jim Fleischman.
Robert and Butcher Palmer led the Hornets to green and it was fourth place starter Josh Hill taking the lead on the opening circuit. Chris Powers was able to sneak around Hill on lap four to take over the race lead. Once infront, Powers pulled away from the field. Ben Russo, Louis Carbone and Jeff Szafraniec put on a three car battle for the runner up spot for most of the event. Powers was able to pick up the victory over Ben Russo. Cousin Louis Carbone came home in third and was followed to the line by Jeff Szafraniec and Josh Hill.
Mike Myers was awarded the win in the M&M U Pull-It Figure 8’s after Jason Eck and Jason Adams came together on the last lap. Adams and Eck would battle for the lead for much of the event and Eck was able to take the lead on lap four. Coming into the final two turns, Eck and Adams made contact and Adams appeared to cross the line first but officials penalized Adams, therefore giving the win to Mike Myers.
News and Notes: Tyler Turnbull did a simple rollover after getting loose during his NYPAMA TQ Midgets qualifying event. Tyler climbed out of his racer under his own power. With their one-two-three finish in the make-up feature from July 27th, Dave, Amy and Tommy Catalano became the first family in Holland history to have a husband, wife and son finish one-two-three respectively.
Racing returns to the highbanks on Saturday August 24th as Pizza Hut presents a full NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Program featuring the Getzoni Nationwide Insurance Agency NASCAR Pro Modifieds, the McClurg Auto Group Late Models, the Bank of Holland Chargers, M&M U Pull-It Figure 8’s, the 4 Cylinder Hornets and the NYPAMA TQ Midgets. Pit Gates will open at 3:30 while grandstand gates open at 4:45 and qualifying will begin at 5:00pm. NASCAR feature racing will begin promptly at 7:05pm.

3rd win of the season for Rich Carnes

Kirk Totten Wins 14th George Decker Memorial Pro Modified 100
HOLLAND, NY…. For the second time in three seasons, Barker, NY resident Kirk Totten picked up the Perpetual Trophy after winning the 14th running of the George Decker Memorial 100 for the Getzoni Nationwide Insurance Agency NASCAR Pro Modifieds in front of a great crowd on a gorgeous Saturday evening in the Holland hills. Other winners included Eldon King III from Freedom, NY outraced Brandon Glover to claim his third win of the season in the McClurg Auto Group NASCAR Late Models. Rich Carnes from Cheektowaga, NY picked up his third Bank of Holland Chargers victory of the 2013 season. Dave Wollaber from North Tonawanda, NY picked up his third NYPAMA TQ Midget feature of the season. 2012 Hornet Champion Jeff Szafraniec from Buffalo, NY picked up his second Hornet victory of the 2013 racing season. Josh Hill from Irving, NY picked up his career feature win in the M&M U Pull-It Figure 8’s.
Kevin Lewis and Kirk Totten were on the front row for the George Decker Memorial 100 for the Getzoni Nationwide Insurance Agency NASCAR Pro Modifieds and it was Totten jumping into the early race lead. Tommy Catalano raced his way into second on lap two with Lewis, Amy Catalano and TJ Potrzebowski racing in the top five. Amy Catalano moved into third on lap five as Potrzebowski followed suit and moved into fourth, dropping Kevin Lewis from third to fifth. Jimmy Zacharias entered the lap five on lap 10.
Nick Shaw got loose in turn two to bring out the races first caution on lap 12. On the lap 14 restart, Kirk Totten pulled away from Catalano with George Skora III working his way into the top five. The caution came out for the second time on lap 24 for TJ Potrzebowski as the “Piranha” came to a stop in turn four. The yellow lights would immediately come back out as Kyle Inman and the “Strykersville Flash” Dave Heitzhaus came together exiting turn two and both hit the back stretch wall. Heitzhaus was able to continue on racing but the same couldn’t be said for Inman, who was making his asphalt racing debut.
On the lap 29 restart, Totten, Catalano, Skora, Amy and Jake Vernon racing in the top five. Andy Jankowiak worked his way from deep in the field and by lap 35, was into the top five after passing Jimmy Zacharias. On lap 36, George Skora III worked his way into second place and on the same lap, Jankowiak passed Jake Vernon for fourth place. Andy Jankowiak’s great run would come to an end after breaking the Cam in the engine on lap 38. On the restart, George Skora III inherited the lead with Vernon and Jimmy Zacharias racing in the top three. Tommy Catalano looped his racer while racing in third and slowed the field down for the fifth time of the event. The caution would come back out a short time later as 2011 NYS NASCAR Champion Amy Catalano came to a stop in turn four to bring out the yellow on lap 48. At the races halfway point, George Skora continued to show the way over Jake Vernon, Jimmy Zacharias, Kirk Totten, Jeff Brown, Dave Catalano, Dave Heitzhaus, Jason Kline, Don King and Nick Shaw racing in the top ten.
On the restart Skora continued to show the way as Jimmy Zacharias tried to work underneath Vernon for second as Jeff Brown, who started 19th on the grid raced his way into the top five. A four car battle for third place took place between Zacharias, Brown, Totten and Heitzhaus. On lap 62, Brown got around Jimmy Z for third place and went underneath Jake Vernon for second. Kirk Totten raced his way back to third with 33 laps remaining and then went to work on Brown for second place. On lap 68, Totten cleared Jeff Brown for second and went to work on leader Skora just as Tony Carbone hit the turn two wall. Carbone was able to walk away from his incident under his own power.
A late race restart would see Totten retake the lead away from Skora just as Heitzhaus raced his way into fifth place. Jeff Brown retook third from Jake Vernon in the late going. Totten would pull away from Skora to pick up his second perpetual trophy in the George Decker Memorial 100. Jeff Brown would finish in third and was followed to the line by Dave Heitzhaus and Jimmy Zacharias finishing in fifth, edging out Jake Vernon.
Josh Hathaway and Mike Ticco led the field of McClurg Auto Group Late Models for their 20 lap feature and Hathaway led lap one. Mike Ticco took over the lead on lap 3 and held it for eight circuits before Brandon Glover took command of the field. With Ticco dominating the early stages of the feature event, Brandon Glover and Eldon King III tried everything in their power to catch Ticco. The caution would come out on lap 12 after a simple spin on the back stretch. JD Roberts suffered mechanical issues and pulled into the infield. On the restart, Brandon Glover took over the race lead from Ticco with Eldon King III racing his way into second place. The yellow lights would illuminate the speedway once more with under five laps remaining after Josh Hathaway had his throttle stick and he hit the turn one wall hard. Hathaway walked away from the scene under his own power. On the restart, Eldon King III made his move on the outside and took command of the field. Glover would give it his all in the final lap and a half but King was able to hold off all of Glover’s challenges to notch his third win of the season.

With Maltby out front, Eric Brown went to the outside of Carnes and took over second on lap eight as Jerry Kosmowski and Dave Wilson Jr went side by side for fourth place with Wilson getting the advantage. Carnes was able to get underneath Brown in his attempt to retake second place and was successful on lap 15 just as Dave Wilson moved around Brown for third just one lap later. Maltby and Carnes went side by side for several circuits and Carnes was able to take the race lead on lap 19. Just one lap later, Wilson got around Maltby for second place and began his chase of race leader Rich Carnes. Wilson was able to get underneath Carnes but was unsuccessful in gaining the race lead in the late stages of the 30 lap feature event. Carnes was able to hold off Wilson for the win. The lead duo was followed to the line by Tom Northem, Eric Brown, and Ken Maltby.
Chad Heywood and Andy Nye led the 23 car field of NYPAMA TQ Midgets to the green flag for their feature event and it was Andy Nye racing his way into the lead aboard his Main Street Pub machine number 66. Team Vinnie members Vinnie Christiano Jr and Dave Wollaber raced their way into second and third while Shawn Nye tried to go three wide for second place on lap three. Shawn Nye was able to get around Christiano for third place and set his sights on Dave Wollaber for second place on lap six. Dave Wollaber raced his way underneath Andy Nye and took over the race lead on lap seven while Shawn Nye raced his way past his brother for second just one lap later. Camden Barber went side by side with Nye for third for a couple of circuits and cleared Nye for third with six laps remaining. Kyle Hutchinson was able to get around Andy Nye to take over fourth place with five laps remaining as the top two pulled away from the field. Dave Wollaber was able to hold off Shawn Nye to grab the feature win. Camden Barber crossed the line in third and was followed closely to the line by Kyle Hutchinson and Jonathan Reid.
The father and son duo of Robert and Donald “Butcher” Palmer led the field of 4 Cylinder Hornets to the green flag for their feature event and it was Bob Palmer leading the way on the opening circuit. Josh Hill, who started third on the grid took over the race lead on lap two. Butcher Palmer got loose in turn two and brought out the first caution which also collected Jake Wylie, Waylon Price and John Blinston. On the restart, Josh Hill pulled away from the field as defending divisional champion Jeff Szafraniec and Chris Powers made it a three-car battle for the race lead. The lead trio continued to pull away from the field as Ben Russo, winner of the last four Hornet features moved into the top five. Right before the field hit lap traffic, Jeff Szafraniec was able to go underneath Hill and take over the race lead on lap 15. The races second caution came out on lap 24 as there was a report of fluid on the track. On the restart, Szafraniec was able to pull ahead of Hill, Powers, Tony Carbone and Ben Russo. Russo got around Tony Carbone for fourth and then went to the outside to get around Chris Powers, who issued mechanical problems late in the feature going. Russo continued his late charge to the front as he passed Josh Hill for second place with two laps remaining. Jeff Szafraniec was able to pick up his second win of the season over his Dice Racing teammate Ben Russo. Josh Hill would have his career best finish so far finishing in third with the Carbone cousins of Tony and Louis completing the top five.

News and Notes: 24 of the best open-wheeled Pro Modified drivers from the region including drivers living in New Jersey and North Carolina competed in the George Decker Memorial 100. Ken Maltby, coming out of retirement in 2012, made it to victory lane for the first time in the Charger qualifying heat.
Racing returns to the highbanks on Saturday August 10th as Kayak Pools presents Boy Scout Night and Buffalo and Erie County Library Night. On the racing program, double features will be taking place for both the Modifieds and Late Models. The first features will be make-up features from July 27th. The August 10th feature action will feature the McClurg Auto Group Late Models in a 50 lap feature plus the second appearance of the season for the Big 10 Super Stock Series. A full program of Pro Modifieds, Chargers, TQ Midgets, Hornets and Figure 8’s will also be on the racing card. To wrap up the racing program, a 100 lap Compact Enduro will take place and the winner will win $1000 (based on 50 cars). Pit Gates will open at 3:30 while grandstand gates open at 4:45 and qualifying will begin at 5:00pm. NASCAR feature racing will begin promptly at 7:05pm. A full on track autograph session will be taking place as well next Saturday evening.

HOLLAND, NY…. For the second time in three seasons, Barker, NY resident Kirk Totten picked up the Perpetual Trophy after winning the 14th running of the George Decker Memorial 100 for the Getzoni Nationwide Insurance Agency NASCAR Pro Modifieds in front of a great crowd on a gorgeous Saturday evening in the Holland hills. Other winners included Eldon King III from Freedom, NY outraced Brandon Glover to claim his third win of the season in the McClurg Auto Group NASCAR Late Models. I started 4th, and finished 1st. Hard race tonight!! Great competition and side by side racing. A great bunch of guys to run with. Third win of the year. Third Decker Memorial night win in 4 years.

R.O.C. flagger injured at Holland Speedway
Kellogg Keeps Starter From Fall At Holland by Larry Ott
Steve Kellogg came to Holland Motorsports Complex on Saturday to help his friend John Nelson man the front-stretch starter’s stand and handle the flagging duties for the Race of Champions Asphalt Modified Tour Holland 100. Kellogg did more than that, coming to Nelson’s aid in a time of extreme need.
In one of the scariest incidents in Holla...nd history, a two-car accident caused the Modified of Patrick Emerling to climb the wall and strike the front-stretch starter’s stand with Nelson and Kellogg on it. The stand, along with about 25 yards of catch fence from the stand down through the front stretch, was heavily damaged.
Nelson, who was waving the checkered flag, appeared to be falling toward the track below but Kellogg reached over and pulled him back, preventing a dangerous fall. Despite the damage to the starter’s stand and the surrounding catch fence, no one was seriously injured.
“All I know is that John was waving the double checkered flags at the end of the race and I just heard a big bang and looked at John and he was going down and I grabbed him. It was instinct; that’s all it was,” said Kellogg.
The drama began on the last of the 100 laps of the Holland 100, as leader Pete Brittain crossed the line to apparently beat a closely trailing Matt Hirschman. Brittain would later be disqualified for an altered tire, handing the win officially to Hirschman.
Meanwhile, Andy Jankowiak and Emerling were racing for third place. As the pair approached the checkered flag, side by side, they tangled with both going airborne. Emerling went into the catch fence and struck the starter’s stand, while Jankowiak spun toward the infield. In the aftermath, the two cars came to a stop just past the flag stand with severe damage.
Immediately, several Holland safety workers, officials, track security and emergency medical personnel came to the flag stand area to assist Nelson and the two drivers and to keep the spectators away from the accident scene. No spectator injuries were reported.
The remainder of the race program, which included the NASCAR Late Models and the NASCAR Pro Modifieds, could not be run due to the damage.
A few minutes after the incident, Nelson, who was alert, was placed on a backboard for precautionary measures and taken to a nearby hospital. The last report is that he needed a few stitches but was otherwise OK.
Nelson serves many roles in the sport. He is not only an ROC official but also works for DIRTcar on the DIRTcar 358 Modified Super DIRT Series. He formerly served as race director at Elegant Builders Raceway Park in Lancaster.
Kellogg is a veteran official at various speedways who is also a columnist for the New Jersey-based Area Auto Racing News.
“I have been on the flag stand several times over the years at various tracks but after tonight I just made up my mind that I’m never doing it again,” said Kellogg. “They called me and asked me to help out tonight and this is the first night that John and I ever worked together. He’s fine with just a few cuts and bruises.”
The accident was a tough way for the race to end for both Jankowiak and Emerling. They had different views about how their accident began.
Jankowiak “just went full throttle and bumped me in the corner and then we went onto the straightaway and instead of going straight he just turns right and climbs me up into the wall and junks the car,” said Emerling. “Now there’s nothing left of it.”
“I saw a hole there and I went for it,” countered Jankowiak. “I felt like I came off of the corner low and I gave him a little bump in the corner.
“He gave me another shot in the right rear when we got on the straightaway and it sent my car right and I couldn’t get off him. I hate that it happened. We were both racing hard. I’m just glad that the starter, John Nelson, is going to be OK. He’s a good friend, we all love him and that’s where my mind is. It was a good race. It was a bummer to end the day like that.”
Jankowiak was credited with a second-place finish and Emerling with a third in the Holland 100, according to Holland officials. Emerling is an up-and-coming driver who also competes on the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour. Jankowiak is a rookie in the Modified division; he had success in a Sportsman the last few seasons.
The day began in trying fashion for Jankowiak. He hit the wall in practice and had to make repairs but was able to finish third in his heat race.
An hour after the race, Holland General Manager Tim Bennett spoke about the last-lap incident.
“I was very proud of our group here tonight,” said Bennett of his staff. “They assisted on the scene the way they should and I’m glad that John will be OK. We’re going to rebuild the damaged area this week and have double features for those two divisions next week.”
Saturday’s incident was the second in the track’s 54 years involving the front-stretch starter’s stand. Several seasons ago, former Holland chief starter Dave Sutton was knocked out of the stand when it was struck by driver Jack Gentner. Sutton suffered a broken femur.
The good news Saturday at Holland was the arrival of 24 ROC asphalt Modifieds, up from the 16 that came for the 100-lapper last season. Two Sportsman cars, driven by Kevin Miller and Ed Weber, ran with the Modifieds to bring the Holland 100 starting field to 26 cars.

5TH place finish this week.
It was another rough one this week. I was running a solid 4th place and went for a run at 2nd place with a low move and lost ground to finish 5th. A broken shock didn't help the night either. This coming week, double point for all divisions.

Race of Champions Modified Tour Headlines July 6 Racing Action at Holland
The mighty Race of Champions (RoC) Asphalt Modified Tour returns to the historic Holland highbanks on Saturday, July 6th for the Holland 100 along with a full NASCAR Whelen All-American Series racing program. Last season, second generation driver Matt Hirschman from Northampton, PA passed “the Hotshoe” Chuck Hossfeld from Ransomville, NY to pick up the victory.
Joining the RoC Modifieds will be the Getzoni Nationwide Insurance NASCAR Pro Modifieds, McClurg Auto Group NASCAR Late Models, Bank of Holland Chargers and 4 Cylinder Hornets. The top two (2) finishers in the Pro Modified feature will guarantee themselves a top 12 starting spot for the RoC Sportsman 100 at the Oswego Speedway on Friday July 19 as part of the 63rd SUNOCO Race of Champions Weekend.
The Pro Modified feature will be a non-handicapped event. “What this means is that any area team can come in and compete that night with a draw and re-draw fro the feature position format” stated RoC Tour Director and Promoter Andrew Harpell. “Drivers will be required to have a temporary ten day NASCAR license for this Pro Modified/Sportsman show at a cost of only $50” Harpell continued. “Pro Modified/Sportsman teams can run both the RoC 100 and Pro Modified events but must have separate cars” Harprell added.
The RoC Tour Holland 100 will also see a purse increase. “Teams will be running for a minimum of $400 to take the green flag. In addition, Mike Piscitello and Rob Laskowski have once again put together a huge lap fund program. Also this year, fan and Modified supporter Jim Schaefer will again distribute $1,000 of his own money to the top three finishing teams with the winner receiving $500, second $300 and third $200. In addition, Emerling Chevrolet will sponsor the qualifying events and will award each heat winner $200” stated Harpell.
“It is great to once again be hosting a tour stop for the Race of Champions Modified Tour here at Holland” says Director of Public and Media Relations Steven Petty. “It will be a great night of racing for all our weekly divisions as well as the mighty Mods” Petty continued.

Admission prices for this special event will be $24 for adults. $12 for Students (10-15 years old) and Children aged 5-9 are $2. Ages 4 and under are absolutely free. The Family Pass is available for just $60 and includes two adults and all children 15 and under living in the same household. Pit gate prices will be $35 with a Holland, NASCAR or RoC License and $45 without a license.
