Holland Honors 2012 Champions at End of Season Banquet
CHEEKTOWAGA, NY… The Holland NASCAR Motorsports Complex officially closed the books on their 53rd season of racing with the celebration of champions at the Millennium Hotel. The 2012 Champions were honored as well as their crews and sponsors for having a great 2012 racing season. Comedian Chris Wild had the crowd entertained in-between award presentations.
The 2012 Holland track titles were decided in all divisions on September 1st as second generation driver Andy Jankowiak from Tonawanda, NY would win his first Holland Getzoni Nationwide Insurance NASCAR Pro Modified Title. Eldon King III won his second straight and third overall McClurg Auto Group Late Model crown. Jim Loffredo would win his second straight Bank of Holland Charger title and third championship of his career. Jeff Szafraniec would win his first career Hornet title. Camden Barber from Bliss, NY would win his second consecutive TQ Midget title as Jason Adams from Glenwood, NY won his second straight M&M U Pull It Figure 8 car championship.
The Rookie of the Year Award is in memory of Clark Rice, a man who was vital in the beginning to make Holland what it is today. The Clark Rice Memorial Rookie of the Year was given to Tommy Catalano (Pro Modified), Corey Glover (Late Models), Jason Adams (Chargers), Donald “Butcher” Palmer (Figure 8’s) and Jennifer Termer (Hornets). The Bank of Holland presented the Most Popular Driver Award. This award was voted on by the fans each week in their souvenir racing programs. The recipients of this award were Tommy Catalano (Pro Modifieds), JD Roberts (Late Models), Rich Carnes (Chargers), Kyle Hutchinson (TQ Midgets), Butch Palmer (Figure 8’s) and Jeff Szafraniec (Hornets).
The Unsung Hero Award went to Robb Lewis; also known as “Agent 88”. Lewis was the roaming reporter this season and did a great job in his first season in that position. Special awards were also presented to the speedway officials that made Thursday night/Saturday afternoon practices running smooth and to the media for keeping everyone informed of what was going on at Holland each and every race night. The most sportsmanlike driver award was presented by McCool Paintworkz and is one of the most coveted awards to ever be received. This award was voted on by the competitors and they all said that Jennifer Termer was the most Sportsman Like driver of the 2012 season. Termer had Hornet Champion Jeff Szafraniec in her car so he could keep up in the points standings for the couple of weeks that he was without a car after crashing his primary car. The Mechanic of the Year went to Rich Hamann, father of Kris Hamann, Charger and Late Model competitor.
In the Getzoni Nationwide Insurance NASCAR Pro Modifieds, the King Motorsports crew received the Best Appearing Pit Crew Award while young driver Owen Bednasz won the Best Appearing Car Award presented by McCool Paint Workz. The Most Improved Driver Award was presented by the VSP Marketing Group and Joe Carbone was the most improved for the Pro Modifieds while Dave Catalano was the Hard Luck recipient. The premier division on the highbanks of Holland saw six different competitors seeing the checkered flag first while Champion Andy Jankowiak won on five occasions including the George Decker Memorial 100 held in mid Summer. Kirk Totten, winner of the 2011 George Decker Memorial, won the end of the season 50 lap special.
The McClurg Auto Group NASCAR Late Models (formally Late Models of Tomorrow) saw JD Roberts winning the Best Appearing Car award while Nick Crassi’s crew won the Best Appearing Pit Crew award. Mike Ticco was the Hard Luck Driver and Josh Hathaway was named Most Improved Driver. There were four different winners in the division in 2012, while Champion Eldon King III won eight times and had six victories in a row to close out the season. King would win the Budweiser 50 presented by Martin Brothers Chevrolet on Season Championship Night. Mike Ticco and Nick Crassi won the Summer Shootout 50 for the Late Models in July.
The competitive Bank of Holland Chargers saw seven different winners in victory circle. Champion Jim Loffredo won four events throughout the summer months. Zach Myers who returned to racing in 2012 after missing the entire 2011 campaign, won the Bank of Holland 50 on June 16th. Jerry Kosmowski’s crew was the best appearing throughout the season as was the car of Dave Wilson Jr. Ken Maltby, who returned to racing at Holland after a several year hiatus received the Hard Luck Award while “Crazy T” Tom Northem was the most improved driver in the division.
In the Hornet division, saw either a driver representing Dice Racing or Dagofast Racing in victory lane. Dice Racing’s Jeff Szafraniec won the divisional title behind eight victories including a streak of three in a row early in the season and then four in a row to close the books on the 2012 campaign as well as the season championship 50 lap special. The McCool racing team won the best appearing crew award while Chris Powers had the best appearing car, voted on by the officials. Samantha Lutz, who got engaged to Jeff Szafraniec in mid August, was the Hard Luck driver for the class and Louis Carbone was the most improved driver after his second full season in the division.
The M&M U Pull it Auto Parts Figure 8 division saw Jason Adams win his second straight divisional crown. Dale McCool received the Hard Luck Award while Donald “Butcher” Palmer was named Most Improved. Butcher won his first career Figure 8 event on Memorial Day weekend.
The Bennett family along with the entire staff and management of the Complex would like to thank all the drivers, crews and fans for supporting the track and wishes everyone a safe and joyous holiday season and hopes to see everyone back to the highbanks for the 2013 racing season. Holland Hosts 1st Northeast Racers Paintball Championships
HOLLAND, NY… The Holland NASCAR Motorsports Complex and the Holland Paintball Adventure Park is hosting the first ever Northeast Racers Paintball Championship. The event will take place on Saturday November 10th from 1-5pm at the Paintball Adventure Park, located behind the Holland NASCAR Motorsports Complex on Holland-Glenwood Road.
“We are looking for more players to represent Holland, Dunn Tire Raceway Park and Wyoming County International Speedway” says Public Relations Director Steven Petty. “We already have a team filled representing the Spencer Speedway” Petty continued. The four tracks will be fighting for bragging rights and a trophy that is made by Rob Pocobello and RJP Motorsports.
The Northeast Racers Paintball Championship will be a round-robin format played on all three fields at the complex, including the newest field, Ava’s Lookout. The other fields that will be used will be Sherwood and Shipwrecked. The cost is $10 if you have your own equipment and $25 if needing to rent equipment. There is also a discount on paintballs, getting 2000 for $60 and 500 balls for $20 dollars.

HOLLAND, NY… Labor Day Weekend at the Holland Motorsports Complex brings Season Championships presented by Budweiser, Try-It Distributing and Martin Brothers Chevrolet. The Pro Modifieds, Late Models, Chargers and Hornets all ran 50 lap features on Championship Saturday as the Figure 8’s, TQ Midgets and Cup Lites all ran regular distance events. On the highbanks, second generation driver Kirk Totten from Barker, NY would pick up his first victory of 2012 in the Getzoni Nationwide Insurance NASCAR Pro Modifieds. Freedom, NY’s Eldon King III won his eighth McClurg Auto Group Late Model feature main. Jim Loffredo from Orchard Park, NY would win his fourth Bank of Holland Charger main while Jeff Szafraniec from Buffalo would claim his eighth Hornet feature of the season. Dave Wollaber from North Tonawanda, NY would win his fourth Casey’s TQ Midget feature as Bill Lutz from Buffalo won his second M&M U Pull It Figure 8 car main. Billy Burd from Akron, NY won his first Cup Lite feature of the season on the Holland highbanks.

Former Holland Pro Mod divisional champion Neal Dietz Jr and Don King Jr led the field of Getzoni Insurance NASCAR Pro Modified to the green flag and it was Dietz out to the early race lead. Dave Catalano would pass his son Tommy for second early on as did Kirk Totten to take over third. Totten would then pass Dave Catalano on lap 10 to take over second to begin his chase of race leader Neal Dietz. As Dietz would pull away, Totten, in his Rutherford-Johnson Racing number 11 would began to reel in race leader Dietz on lap 15. Totten went underneath Dietz as the two went side by side for a whole lap and Totten would take over the lead on lap 17. Totten would then quickly pull away from Dietz, the Catalano father and son duo of Dave and Tommy and current points leader Andy Jankowiak running in fifth at the races halfway mark.
Tommy Catalano would get around his father Dave to take over third place with just eight laps remaining. Dietz would reel in Toten with four laps remaining but couldn’t get around the Johnson-Rutherford Racing entry. Totten would hang on for his first win of the season. Dietz would finish second and he was followed to the line by Tommy Catalano, Dave Catalano and Andy Jankowiak would complete the top five. With his fifth place finish, Jankowiak would collect his first career Holland track championship.
Corey Glover and Josh Hathaway led the McClurg Auto Group Late Models to the green flag for their 50 lap Season Championship event and it was Glover out to the early race lead. Corey would lead the first two circuits before being passed by his younger brother Brandon. “The Young Gun” from Cuba, NY in his Sterilator Corporation, TW Pure Water car number 21 began to pull away from the field. With the Glover family in command of the race early on, point’s leader and defending divisional champion Eldon King III moved up from his mid pack starting spot and took over the lead on lap number 10.
King would then dominate the remaining 40 laps to pick up his sixth straight victory, giving him eight on the season and his third divisional title in four years. Mike Ticco would have a solid night finishing in second and he was followed to the line by Nick Crassi, Steve Kreitzbender and Brandon Glover.
Zach Myers and Jason Adams led the field of Bank of Holland Chargers to the green flag for their 50 lap Championship event with Myers leading the opening circuits. With Myers leading the way, Shawn Lafferty and Marty Hughes came together in turn three with Lafferty and Hughes both going airborne with Lafferty going up on his roof. Both drivers were okay. On the restart, Myers had Rich Carnes lined up next to him and Carnes would take the lead on the back stretch and cleared Myers on lap number nine. With the pair of 17’s of Carnes and Myers leading the way, Dave Wilson Jr and defending Champion Jim Loffredo moved their way up through the field as Loffredo was running third and Wilson was in sixth when the races second caution came out for Ken Maltby as his ride went up in a puff of smoke.
The lap 24 restart saw Carnes pull away with Loffredo and Wilson following Carnes on the outside groove. Loffredo was in third and Wilson was looking for fifth as Tom Northem had the position. Loffredo looked underneath Myers for second and would complete the pass on lap 30 to take over second. The defending divisional champion pulled away from Myers as Tom Northem was continuing to move up through the field as Northem would pass Myers for third with 17 remaining.
“The Lo-Risk Racer” Jim Loffredo would reel in Carnes and would complete the pass on lap 37 as Northem was reeling him in. “Crazy T” would try everything in his power to pass race leader Loffredo but the “Lo-Risk Racer” would win his fourth checkered flag of the season and second straight track title.
Bill Lutz and Louis Carbone led the field of Hornets to the green flag for their 50 lap Championship finale and it was Carbone leading the opening circuit. Carbone got loose exiting the fourth corner on lap five to give the lead over to Ben Russo. Point’s leader entering the 50 lap affair was Jeff Szafraniec and the Buffalo resident would pass his Dice Racing teammate on lap eight to take over the race lead. Chasing Szafraniec in the points chase was Chris Powers from Orchard Park. The Well Bar and Grille, Pro Fireplace number 17 Honda Civic started fifth on the grid and got around “the Dice Man” Bill Lutz on lap 20 to take over the fourth position.
The races first yellow came out on lap 38 as Tim Boyce lost the handle of his Dagofast Fabrication, Towne Automotive Group number 12 machine in turn two to slow the field down. The restart saw Szafraniec and Russo pull away from the Carbone cousins Louis and Tony. Szafraniec, once having the lead never relinquished the coveted top spot as he would be on a “Saturday night cruise” as he scored not only his eighth win of the season, but his first career Holland Motorsports Complex track championship. Teammate Ben Russo finished second and was followed to the line by Louis Carbone, Tony Carbone and Chris Powers.
Nelson Rung and Hayden Newcomb led the field of Casey’s TQ Midgets to the green flag for their 20 lap Championship event with Newcomb leading the opening circuit. Vinnie Christiano Jr lost the handle of his Englewood Collision ride in turn two and collected Dean McConnaughy, Camden Barber, Erick Rudolph, Kyle Hutchinson and Jim Fleischman. All would continue on but Chad Heywood, in a separate incident had to get towed off the track. On the restart it was Newcomb continuing to show the way with Dave Wollaber and Andy Jankowiak moved up through the field to take over second and third. On lap six, Wollaber would take over the lead.
Hutchinson, who entered the night as the points leader had a rough night as he spun in turn one to bring out the races second caution. The restart saw Wollaber pull away and the North Tonawanda pilot would pick up his fifth Holland win of the season. He was followed by Newcomb, Jankowiak, Eric Musto and Camden Barber completing the top five.
Shane Riffel and “Ol DW” Dave Whittaker led the field of Cup Lites to the green flag with Riffel leading the circuits in his Monster Energy Drink number 54. “The Bird Man” Billy Burd looked underneath Riffel down the back stretch on lap 5 and got to even terms but couldn’t complete the pass at the races halfway mark. Mark Hoch would try anything in his power to reel in Burd and Riffel and contact was made in the last turn between the top two cars and Burd would take over the lead and won his first career Holland checkered and second Cup Lite main of the year.
Butcher Palmer and Bill Lutz led the M&M U Pull It Figure 8 car main and it was the Dice Man leading all the laps to get his second win of the season. Lutz won on Opening Day and his second win coming on Season Championship night. With his second place finish, Jason Adams won his second straight Figure 8 Championship.
HOLLAND NOTES: Third generation driver Erick Rudolph from Ransomville made his first TQ Midget start of the season as he was filling in for Shawn Nye. Rudolph last raced on the highbanks when the Race of Champions Modified Tour was in town. A scary scene was seen in the Charger feature as Shawn Lafferty and Marty Hughes both going airborne with Lafferty ending up on his roof in turn three. Both drivers were ok and climbed out of their cars on their own power. Lafferty was quoted saying “I’m alright hunny” telling his wife that he was ok.
Holland returns to action next Saturday night September 8th as the “Wildest Show on Wheels”, Carwarz Crash-A-Rama presented by M&M U Pull It Auto Parts will be back for a night of metal mayhem. Featured events include a stock car Figure 8 race, school bus figure 8 race, the compact Enduro 100 plus the boat-trailer race as well a huge fireworks show and the ugly truck contest presented by WPIG Radio. Pit gates will swing open at 2:00pm with Grandstand gates opening at 4 while the destruction gets underway at 6:30pm.

With his fifth place finish, Jankowiak would collect his first career Holland track championship.
Corey Glover and Josh Hathaway led the McClurg Auto Group Late Models to the green flag for their 50 lap Season Championship event and it was Glover out to the early race lead. Corey would lead the first two circuits before being passed by his younger brother Brandon. “The Young Gun” from Cuba, NY in his Sterilator Corporation, TW Pure Water car number 21 began to pull away from the field. With the Glover family in command of the race early on, point’s leader and defending divisional champion Eldon King III moved up from his mid pack starting spot and took over the lead on lap number 10.
King would then dominate the remaining 40 laps to pick up his sixth straight victory, giving him eight on the season and his third divisional title in four years. Mike Ticco would have a solid night finishing in second and he was followed to the line by Nick Crassi, Steve Kreitzbender and Brandon Glover.
Zach Myers and Jason Adams led the field of Bank of Holland Chargers to the green flag for their 50 lap Championship event with Myers leading the opening circuits. With Myers leading the way, Shawn Lafferty and Marty Hughes came together in turn three with Lafferty and Hughes both going airborne with Lafferty going up on his roof. Both drivers were okay. On the restart, Myers had Rich Carnes lined up next to him and Carnes would take the lead on the back stretch and cleared Myers on lap number nine. With the pair of 17’s of Carnes and Myers leading the way, Dave Wilson Jr and defending Champion Jim Loffredo moved their way up through the field as Loffredo was running third and Wilson was in sixth when the races second caution came out for Ken Maltby as his ride went up in a puff of smoke.
The lap 24 restart saw Carnes pull away with Loffredo and Wilson following Carnes on the outside groove. Loffredo was in third and Wilson was looking for fifth as Tom Northem had the position. Loffredo looked underneath Myers for second and would complete the pass on lap 30 to take over second. The defending divisional champion pulled away from Myers as Tom Northem was continuing to move up through the field as Northem would pass Myers for third with 17 remaining.
“The Lo-Risk Racer” Jim Loffredo would reel in Carnes and would complete the pass on lap 37 as Northem was reeling him in. “Crazy T” would try everything in his power to pass race leader Loffredo but the “Lo-Risk Racer” would win his fourth checkered flag of the season and second straight track title.
Bill Lutz and Louis Carbone led the field of Hornets to the green flag for their 50 lap Championship finale and it was Carbone leading the opening circuit. Carbone got loose exiting the fourth corner on lap five to give the lead over to Ben Russo. Point’s leader entering the 50 lap affair was Jeff Szafraniec and the Buffalo resident would pass his Dice Racing teammate on lap eight to take over the race lead. Chasing Szafraniec in the points chase was Chris Powers from Orchard Park. The Well Bar and Grille, Pro Fireplace number 17 Honda Civic started fifth on the grid and got around “the Dice Man” Bill Lutz on lap 20 to take over the fourth position.
The races first yellow came out on lap 38 as Tim Boyce lost the handle of his Dagofast Fabrication, Towne Automotive Group number 12 machine in turn two to slow the field down. The restart saw Szafraniec and Russo pull away from the Carbone cousins Louis and Tony. Szafraniec, once having the lead never relinquished the coveted top spot as he would be on a “Saturday night cruise” as he scored not only his eighth win of the season, but his first career Holland Motorsports Complex track championship. Teammate Ben Russo finished second and was followed to the line by Louis Carbone, Tony Carbone and Chris Powers.
Nelson Rung and Hayden Newcomb led the field of Casey’s TQ Midgets to the green flag for their 20 lap Championship event with Newcomb leading the opening circuit. Vinnie Christiano Jr lost the handle of his Englewood Collision ride in turn two and collected Dean McConnaughy, Camden Barber, Erick Rudolph, Kyle Hutchinson and Jim Fleischman. All would continue on but Chad Heywood, in a separate incident had to get towed off the track. On the restart it was Newcomb continuing to show the way with Dave Wollaber and Andy Jankowiak moved up through the field to take over second and third. On lap six, Wollaber would take over the lead.
Hutchinson, who entered the night as the points leader had a rough night as he spun in turn one to bring out the races second caution. The restart saw Wollaber pull away and the North Tonawanda pilot would pick up his fifth Holland win of the season. He was followed by Newcomb, Jankowiak, Eric Musto and Camden Barber completing the top five.
Shane Riffel and “Ol DW” Dave Whittaker led the field of Cup Lites to the green flag with Riffel leading the circuits in his Monster Energy Drink number 54. “The Bird Man” Billy Burd looked underneath Riffel down the back stretch on lap 5 and got to even terms but couldn’t complete the pass at the races halfway mark. Mark Hoch would try anything in his power to reel in Burd and Riffel and contact was made in the last turn between the top two cars and Burd would take over the lead and won his first career Holland checkered and second Cup Lite main of the year.
Butcher Palmer and Bill Lutz led the M&M U Pull It Figure 8 car main and it was the Dice Man leading all the laps to get his second win of the season. Lutz won on Opening Day and his second win coming on Season Championship night. With his second place finish, Jason Adams won his second straight Figure 8 Championship.
HOLLAND NOTES: Third generation driver Erick Rudolph from Ransomville made his first TQ Midget start of the season as he was filling in for Shawn Nye. Rudolph last raced on the highbanks when the Race of Champions Modified Tour was in town. A scary scene was seen in the Charger feature as Shawn Lafferty and Marty Hughes both going airborne with Lafferty ending up on his roof in turn three. Both drivers were ok and climbed out of their cars on their own power. Lafferty was quoted saying “I’m alright hunny” telling his wife that he was ok.
Holland returns to action next Saturday night September 8th as the “Wildest Show on Wheels”, Carwarz Crash-A-Rama presented by M&M U Pull It Auto Parts will be back for a night of metal mayhem. Featured events include a stock car Figure 8 race, school bus figure 8 race, the compact Enduro 100 plus the boat-trailer race as well a huge fireworks show and the ugly truck contest presented by WPIG Radio. Pit gates will swing open at 2:00pm with Grandstand gates opening at 4 while the destruction gets underway at 6:30pm.

This past week was another tough one. I started out in tenth, moved up to 5th in a matter of 2 laps, then got tagged and almost lost it down the frontstretch! I was able to save it from wrecking but only finished 10th as there were no cautions in the event. This week is the season finale for a total of 50 laps.
