06/22/13

It was a tough night this week. The car's transmission cooler broke and fluid was leaking all over the right front tire. With fluid on the tire, that makes for a very slippery ride. I was able to hold on for 7th place this week.

MEDIA RELEASE – FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 6-22-13 HOLLAND MOTORSPORTS COMPLEX

Ben Russo Triumphs in Hornet 50; Lee Sharpsteen Wins Big 10 Super Stocks At Holland Motorsports Complex

HOLLAND, NY… Ben Russo from Lancaster, NY picked up the win in the 50 lap Hornet feature event on Rupp Overhead Door, WNY Heroes and VSP Marketing Group night at the Holland NASCAR Motorsports Complex on a sun-sational Saturday evening in the Holland hills. Lee Sharpsteen from Waverly, NY was the winner of the visiting Big 10 Super Stocks. Kirk Totten from Barker, NY drove away to his first Getzoni Agency NASCAR Pro Modified feature of the season. Eldon King III from Freedom, NY won the McClurg Auto Group NASCAR Late Model main event while Dave Wilson Jr from Hamburg, NY won his first Bank of Holland Charger feature of the season. Third generation driver Camden Barber from Bliss, NY won the NYPAMA TQ Midgets. Defending M&M U Pull It Figure 8’s Champion Jason Adams from Glenwood, NY picked up the Figure 8 feature event.

Josh Hill and Robert Palmer led the field of Hornets to the green flag for their 50 lap feature event and it was Hill leading early on and it was Kenny Hejna being scored the leader at the end of lap one. Ben Russo and Bill Lutz battled for second place with Russo reeling in Hejna and it was Russo taking over the race lead on lap number four. Cousins Chris Powers and Tony Carbone battled for fourth and both drivers got around Bill Lutz to move into positions three and four at the end of lap seven. Carbone quickly went to work passed Hejna for third on lap nine while Chris Powers started to set his sights on race leader Russo.
The first yellow of the event came out on lap 16 for Destiny Koningisor who spun in turn four. The advantage that Russo had on the field was erased as on the restart, he saw the 17 ride of Chris Powers next to him. On the restart it was Russo pulling away from the field with Powers running in second.
Behind the leaders, Cousins Tony and Louis Carbone put on a great battle with defending divisional champ Jeff Szafraniec for third place. Heavy lap traffic proved to be the great equalizer on several occasions but Powers was unable to capitalize and complete the pass for the lead.
Russo would pick up the win over Powers with Szafraniec and Tony Carbone completing the top four with Louis Carbone finishing in fifth.

Lee Sharpsteen and Tim Welshans were on the front row for the visiting Big 10 Super Stocks series to the green flag and it was Sharpsteen getting the early race lead over Tim Welshans, Jason Dieter, Wayne Bernhardt and Joe Mancuso racing in the top five early on in their 35 lap feature event.
Series Point’s leader going into the feature Mike Ramos was racing his way through the field and was inside the top five by lap 10. Jason Dieter and Joe Mancuso would battle for several laps for the number three spot which turned into the battle for second after Tim Welshans came into the infield with a flat right rear tire. Lap traffic became havoc for the race leaders throughout the event but Sharpsteen was able to open up his leading over the battle for second,
Lee Sharpsteen would pull away from the field and picked up his first career win at Holland. Joe Mancuso would cross the line in second while Jason Dieter crossed the line in third. However, Mancuso, Dieter and fourth place finisher Mike Ramos were all found to be illegal in post race tech.

Kirk Totten and Jeff Brown led the field of Pro Modifieds to the green flag and it was Totten getting out to the early race lead. Tony Carbone would spin to bring out the caution to slow the field down for the first time. Totten would continue to show the way but the man on the move was last weeks feature winner George Skora III as Skora moved into fourth on lap six and went for third on the lap later and passed Tommy Catalano. On lap nine, Skora passed Brown for second and started to reel in race leader Totten who had a full straightaway lead on lap 12. Catalano would lead a tight five car battle for third which saw both Dave and Amy Catalano racing behind Brown and “Earthquake” Jake Vernon at the races halfway mark. Vernon would pull into the infield with five laps remaining, giving up the battle for fourth between himself, Dave Catalano and Jeff Brown.
Kirk Totten drove away from the field and picked up his first victory of the season over George Skora III. Tommy Catalano would finish in third just ahead of Jeff Brown and Dave Catalano.

Josh Hathaway and veteran racer Mike Ticco led the field of McClurg Auto Group NASCAR Late Models to the green flag in their 20 lap feature event and it was Ticco winning the drag race down the front stretch for the first time. Eldon King III quickly moved into second and wasted absolutely no time to take over the race lead on lap three. Last week’s feature winner Brandon Glover started in the last row of the starting grid and was up to third place by lap number seven.
With the Late Models pulling away from the rest of the field, Glover quickly went to work on the veteran Mike Ticco for second place but was unable to complete the pass. Eldon King III would be on a Saturday night cruise in route to his second win of the season. Ticco would finish in second and was followed to the line by Brandon Glover, JD Roberts and Josh Hathaway completing the top five.

Zach Myers and Al Grimmer led the Bank of Holland Chargers to the green flag and it was Myers leading the way from his pole position start. Dave Wilson Jr, moved up from his fourth place starting spot to take over position number two on lap five and began his chase of race leader Myers. Eric Brown tried to reel in Wilson for second but the yellow flag came out for Al Grimmer who spun in turn three. On the lap 12 restart it was Myers and Wilson leading the field back to the green flag and it was Myers showing the way but it was Dave Wilson completing the pass on lap 14 to take over the race lead. Eric Brown tried the outside groove to get around Myers but last week’s co-feature winner Thomas Northem passed Brown to take over third place. After passing Brown for third, Northem quickly passed Myers for second place on lap 22 and began his chase of leader Wilson. Dave Wilson Jr would go on to pick up the win with Northem, Myers, Jerry Kosmowki, and Brown completing the top five.

Cody Mollnow and Chad Heywood led the field of NYPAMA TQ Midgets to the green flag and it was fourth place starter Camden Barber getting the lead on the opening circuit. With Barber pulling away, Andy Nye, Chad Heywood, Kyle Hutchinson, Vince Christiano Jr and Jonathan Reid was all right there challenging for the runner up position. Nye would pick up the second spot on lap 11 as Hutchinson and Reid went side by side for third for several laps with Reid getting the better of the duo.
The red flag came out on lap 17 as Nelson Rung flipped in turn three after loosing his brake line. Rung climbed out of his Star Graphics and Apparel, Barber’s Automotive machine under his own power. The three lap shootout saw Barber and Andy Nye lead Reid and Hutchinson back to the green flag and it was Barber showing the way with Reid going to the outside to challenge Nye for second place. Defending divisional Champ Barber would pick up the win. Jonathan Reid would finish in second followed by Kyle Hutchinson completing the top three.
Robert Palmer and Shane Toms led the field of Figure 8’s to the green flag and it was defending champ Jason Adams who was making his first start of the season was able to get the lead and lead the event from start to finish to pick up his first win of the season. Palmer would finish in second followed by Jason Eck and Shane Toms.

NEWS AND NOTES: Defending Bank of Holland Charger Champion Jim Loffredo made his first start of the season. “With my new job I only have one weekend off a month and whenever that weekend is I will be here racing” said Loffredo. Nelson Rung took a vicious ride into the turn four wall during the TQ Midget feature. Rung was able to climb out of his racer under his own power.

MEDIA RELEASE – FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 6-15-13 HOLLAND MOTORSPORTS COMPLEX

Rich Carnes and Thom Northem Share Bank of Holland 50 Accolades at Holland Motorsports Complex

HOLLAND, NY… Rich Carnes from Cheektowaga, NY and “Crazy T” Thom Northem from Alden, NY headlined the show as he both drivers won their 50 lap special for the Bank of Holland Chargers. I-Evolve Technology Services, 97 Rock, Eastern Hills Mall and Whelen Engineering presented the racing program on an absolute gorgeous Saturday evening in the hills of Holland. George Skora III from Eden, NY scored his first career Holland Open-Wheeled victory as he won the Getzoni Nationwide Insurance Agency NASCAR Pro Modifieds while Brandon Glover from Cuba, NY picked up his first win of the season in the McClurg Auto Group Late Model feature. Dave Wollaber from North Tonawanda, NY was victorious in the NYPAMA TQ Midgets while 2012 Divisional Champion Jeff Szafraniec from Buffalo, NY won the 4 Cylinder NASCAR Hornets feature event. “The Eckness Monster” Jason Eck from Buffalo, NY was victorious in the M&M U Pull-It Figure 8’s.

Zach Myers and Eric Brown led the field of Bank of Holland Chargers to the green flag for their 50 lap Saturday Night Special and it was Myers showing the way over Eric Brown and Opening Night feature winner Rich Carnes. Carnes went to bottom of the speedway to take over second from 2009 and 2011 Hornet Champion Eric Brown. Myers’s night would come to an end on lap seven after he lost power in his TW Signs machine. Carnes would inherit the lead. Former divisional champion Jerry Kosmowski started dead last on the grid and was up to third spot in just 11 laps. Carnes got loose and spun in turn two and gave the lead to Thom Northem. Northem would pull away and lead the field to the checkered-caution on mystery lap 32 to give the Charger 50 a little twist.
The mystery lap was lap 32 and at the conclusion of that lap, Thom Northem had the lead with Jerry Kosmowski running in second and was followed to the line by Eric Brown, Dave Wilson Jr and Kris Hamann. After the inversion pill was pulled, “the Wild Child” Donnie Aquino and Rich Carnes led the field to the green flag for the final 18 lap segment with Carnes pulling away after driving back through the field after an early race spin. Dave Wilson went side by side with Carnes for the lead with Kosmowski, Northem and Hamann all right there fighting for the race win.
Northem went underneath Kosmowski for third place and took over third with nine laps remaining and cleared Kosmowski with eight laps to go. Carnes got loose once again in turn two and that left the opportunity for Dave Wilson and Northem for the lead with a handful of laps remaining. Carnes was able to hold off all the challenges to score his second win of the young 2013 season. Northem would finish in second and was followed to the line by Dave Wilson, Jerry Kosmowski and Kris Hamann.

“Downtown” Jeffrey Brown and Kirk Totten led the field of Getzoni Nationwide Insurance Agency Pro Modifieds to the green flag for their feature event and it was Brown leading the opening circuit. Kirk Totten was able to use the outside groove to take over the lead on lap two. Behind the leaders, 2011 NYS NASCAR Champion Amy Catalano was racing side by side for third with Neal Dietz Jr, George Skora III and Tommy “the Rocket” Catalano right there making it a three car battle for third place early on. Skora got underneath Amy Catalano to take third away on lap seven and quickly went to work on Jeff Brown for the runner up spot at the races one-third mark.
Skora cleared Brown for second on lap 11 with Amy Catalano and son Tommy racing in fourth and fifth place respectively. Dean Kroll would hit the turn four Armco Barrier to bring out the races first caution with sixteen laps remaining. On the restart it was Skora using the outside groove to take over the race lead. “Earthquake” Jake Vernon, Opening Night’s feature winner moved up from his eighth starting spot and entered fourth place at the races halfway mark as Vernon and Tommy Catalano passed Jeff Brown.
Vernon and Tommy Catalano went side by side for several laps and Catalano used the bottom groove to take over fourth with six laps remaining. Kirk Totten’s great race would come to an end with two laps remaining as he spun trying to reel in Skora. The restart saw Skora and Amy Catalano on the front row with Skora pulling away on the outside. Skora would go on to pick up his first career open-wheeled victory with Amy Catalano finishing in second, with Jake Vernon, Tommy Catalano and Dave Catalano completing the top five.

JD Roberts and Josh Hathaway were on the front row for the McClurg Auto Group Late Model feature event and it was Roberts showing the way. Brandon Glover started third on the grid and quickly took second away from Hathaway. Glover and Roberts went side by side for most of the race. Both young drivers swapped the race lead several times throughout the 20 lap feature distance.
Roberts and Glover continued their dual and Roberts got loose going down the back straightaway on the last lap and then again got loose on the front stretch and made contact with the wall as Glover picked up his first feature win of the season. Roberts crossed the line in second and was followed by veteran driver Mike Ticco with Eldon King III finishing fourth and Josh Hathaway completing the top five.

Nelson Rung and third generation driver Camden Barber led the field of TQ Midgets to the green flag for their 20 lap feature event with Barber getting the race lead. Dave Wollaber was on the move quickly as the Opening Day feature winner started 12th on the grid and was up to second in only six laps. Wollaber quickly challenged Barber for the race lead and completed the pass with just five laps remaining. Barber spun in turn four as he tried to retake the lead away from Wollaber. On the restart, Wollaber pulled away from Kyle Hutchinson and the Nye Brothers Shawn and Andy. The caution would come back out as Gordie Steffan and Kylie McElver spun in turn three. Wollaber would pull away on the restart to grab the win.

Donald “Butcher” Palmer and Josh Hill led the field of 4 Cylinder Hornets to the green flag for their 30 lap feature event with Palmer getting the early race advantage. Veteran racer Brian Richael moved up from his fourth starting position to lead the initial lap. Defending divisional champion Jeff Szafraniec went three wide with Richael and Louis Carbone to take over the race lead on lap five. Dice Racing teammate Ben Russo who started 16th on the gird took over third place with just seven laps completed.
Szafraniec continued to pull away from the field but heavy lap traffic was able to be the “great equalizer” as Opening Night feature winner Chris Powers and Ben Russo was able to reel in the race leader. Russo used a lap car as a “pick” to take second away from Powers with just three laps remaining. Jeff Szafraniec would hold off Russo to pick up the win. Powers would finish in third and he was followed by his cousins, Tony and Louis Carbone.

Robert Palmer and Shane Toms led the field of M&M U Pull-It Figure 8’s to the green flag and it was Jason Eck getting the lead when the field got onto the Figure 8 course. Eck would hold off Kyle Skoney and Shane Toms to claim his second win of the season.

NEWS AND NOTES: David Beyea from Old Time Baptist Church was victorious in the rescheduled Faster Pastor Race for area clergy. TQ Midget driver Chris Barber went to the pit area during his qualifying heat and lost control of his racer and flipped going into the pits. Barber was alright and was able to race in the feature. The annual Bank of Holland Gold Rush and kids rides put smiles on the young race fans as they got a ride around the track and was able to collect some change during the Gold Rush.
